Kenya Ballot Secrecy

In 2017, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of Kenya, with the support of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) produced voter education videos, providing information on ballot secrecy. The video is available in English and a transcript of the video is below.

Your vote is secret and it’s really important that you protect the secrecy of your vote. So if you need assistance to mark your ballot, we encourage you to bring someone that you trust to assist you. They don’t have to be a registered voter but must be at least 18 years of age. If you request to be assisted by the presiding officer, it also needs to be in the presence of agents and observers. So rather than exposing your vote to many people, you are encouraged to bring someone of your choice to assist you. Now you know.
